PlayStation 3 FAQs

The Sony PS3 is a great centerpiece for a home entertainment system, since it not only plays outstanding games, but it also doubles as a Blu-Ray player. The PS3 also offers connectivity features with Sony's online service PlayStation Network, which offers downloadable game content, as well as full-on downloadable games which can be purchased at the online PlayStation Store. The PS3 is also home to PlayStation Home, a social networking application that lets you create a virtual avatar for yourself and chat online with other users. Finally, the console comes equipped with an Internet browser, text chat, video chat (using the PlayStation Eye peripheral for video), and is adding support for Netflix movies using the Netflix PS3 disc.

Nintendo Wii FAQs

The Nintendo Wii is a unique video game console that was built for family-friendly group fun. The sleek, iPod-like console hardware comes complemented with equally sleek wireless Wii Remote controllers, which have motion sensors that can detect when you shake, wiggle, or swing the controllers--making the Wii ideal for simple, fun party games that the whole family can enjoy while pantomiming common sports and games like golf and bowling. However, the Wii also has a solid library of games that aren't just for family parties, including Nintendo's heaviest hitters--Mario, Zelda, and Smash Bros., to name just a few. And what's more, the Wii also comes equipped with online functionality that lets you browse the Internet and download games, both in the form of classic 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and 16-bit SNES games from Virtual Console, as well as a variety of independently-developed games on Wiiware.

PlayStation Portable FAQs

Picture
Sony split the PSP gaming system into two distinct products. The traditional, and larger, PSP has a UMD drive; the smaller PSPgo relies purely on internal storage and online media purchases. UMD, or Universal Media Disc, is an optical disc format Sony designed for the PSP. UMDs are smaller than regular CDs and can hold up to 1.8GB of data. UMD games take longer to load than card or cartridge games, but disc-based games tend to have better graphics because they have more storage capacity for game assets.

PlayStation Portable go FAQs

Sony iterates the PSP at a rapid pace. The console has already seen two revamps over the past few years, and the upcoming PSP Go is by far the most radical of them all. Long rumored and then leaked ahead of time, the PSP Go is finally here. To get everyone up to speed, the PSP Go comes with 16GB of onboard storage, has no UMD drive, is substantially smaller than the PSP, and will cost $250 when it hits retail on October 1.

The PSP Go isn't meant to replace the existing PSP but merely to augment the device for a different class of users. Sony made the device for those who have abandoned physical media--hence, the 16GB of storage space, expandable via the M2 memory stick slot. With onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the PSP Go downloads data and games and connects to headsets wirelessly. Sony is emphasizing downloadable games and media for the device, a play to meet Nintendo's DSi Shop and Apple's monumentally successful App Store for the iPhone.

Nintendo DSi

Picture
The Nintendo DSi (ニンテンドーDSi, Nintendō Dī Esu Ai) is a handheld game system created by Nintendo and released between 2008 and 2009 in Japan, Australasia, Europe, North America and China. It is a seventh-generation console and the third iteration of Nintendo DS; its primary market rival is Sony's PlayStation Portable. A larger model, entitled Nintendo DSi XL, was released between 2009 and 2010 in Japan, Europe and North America.

Development of the DSi began in late 2006, and it was unveiled during an October 2008 Nintendo conference in Tokyo. While the DSi's design is similar to that of the DS Lite, it features two digital cameras, supports internal and external content storage, and connects to an online store called the Nintendo DSi Shop. This new functionality was intended to facilitate personalization, so as to encourage each member of a household to purchase an individual DSi.

Reviewers were generally positive in their reception of the Nintendo DSi; although they decried the console's lack of exclusive software, its added functionality caused many to recommend it to non-owners of prior DS models. CNET.com and PC World considered the DSi Shop to be the largest buying incentive for current DS owners.
